Foal update: The mares are keeping me on my toes

I’ve always slightly blamed myself for Snelsmore Nightingale losing her first foal last year; I wasn’t there for her and have never forgotten it. This year she didn’t help me make up for it and with no warning and no udder to suggest she was ready to foal, she popped out a baby all by her own again. By the time I had discovered them he was very weak, dehydrated and confused. He was barely alive but with a little encouragement to suckle and some of my homeopathic remedies, he was soon bouncing about his mum. Nightingale and her new colt foal Solomon were soon reunited with their friends, where she seems rather pleased with herself, not realising the stress she had caused me again. Better keep a careful watch on her next year.

Thinking my luck must change and another filly must be on her way, I was delighted and a little surprised that Snelsmore Icicle was the one to answer my prayers. Icicle and Snelsmore Calipso spend most of their life together as companions up until a few weeks before she foals. They are such a good friends that we often joke they are actually a married couple. This marriage seems to work and they’ve produced another pretty little palomino daughter; long may their love continue.

Chewvalley Sweet Pea has become a favourite mare of mine. She has matured into a lovely person and a much more relaxed mother this year. Her little colt is her first foal by Merrylees Satchmo. We have decided to called him Scout as he’s a real cutie and everybody’s best friend. How anyone could resist that cheeky little face I don’t know!

That’s all on the foals for now, I’ll write some more news about their progress soon.
